What is Holotropic Breathwork?
Holotropic Breathwork is a powerful breathing practice developed by psychiatrist Dr. Stanislav Grof and his wife Christina Grof in the 1970s. The word 'holotropic' comes from Greek meaning 'moving toward wholeness.' The practice uses accelerated breathing, evocative music, and focused bodywork to induce non-ordinary states of consciousness.
Why do my hands cramp or tingle during breathwork?
This sensation, called tetany, affects 70 to 80 percent of people during active breathwork. When you breathe rapidly, carbon dioxide levels drop, causing blood to become more alkaline. This leads to temporary muscle contractions, tingling, or cramping. The sensation is temporary and resolves when breathing normalizes.
